Bryanna Hall named 2020 Youth of the Year

Cincinnati, OH, February 2020 In early February at Great American Ball Park, six outstanding teen girls competed for a $20,000 college Scholarship award and the title “2020 Youth of the Year” from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati (BGCGC). These six young ladies have overcome challenges that many do not experience in a lifetime – making their accomplishments even more impressive. The Youth of the Year competition features Club kids who have met personal challenges head-on and despite the odds, have given back to their Club and community. The Youth of the Year winners are chosen based on their demonstration of service to Club, community and family; academic success; strong moral character; life goals; and public speaking ability. These high achievers personify the values and character of their home Club.

Bryanna Hall, a Sophomore at School for the Creative and Performance Arts, representing the U.S. Bank Club in Avondale was chosen as the 2020 Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati. “Life is like a roller coaster, you have your ups and your downs, but you have to enjoy the ride.  I love the Club, it’s like my amusement park, and I am proud to have them along for my ride” Bryanna shared.

The obstacles that Bryanna has overcome to get to where she is are astounding.  Born with a speech impediment, Bryanna struggled for years in school because her teachers & classmates couldn’t understand her.  After a surgery to remove her tonsils, which were impeding her ability to speak, & many years of speech therapy, Bryanna was proud to stand up in front of the crowd of more than 100 people & tell them her story with confidence.  Bryanna will receive a $20,000 scholarship from Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati as recognition of her hard work and triumph in the Youth of the Year Competition.

“Bryanna has overcome the odds to become an inspiration to everyone here at Boys & Girls Clubs.  She is an example of what determination and a positive attitude can accomplish and she’s far from finished accumulating accomplishments.” said Bill Bresser, President of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati.

Bryanna competed against five other exemplary Youth of the Year finalists:

  • Raquel Jones, a Senior at Western Hills High School, was chosen as the 2020 Youth of the Year Runner-Up.  She attends the Impact Center Boys & Girls Club in the West End.  Raquel enjoys the college tours provided by BGCGC because they have opened her eyes to possibilities for her future.
  • Ruth Tvrdy, a Junior at New Richmond High School who has been attending the Robert Williams Club in New Richmond for 8 years.
  • Chayla Morris, a Senior at Seton High School, who attends the Larry & Rhonda Sheakley Club in Price Hill.  Chayla is a member of the National Honor Society and aspires to one day become a Nurse.
  • Chloe Hutton, a Freshman at Indian Hill High School, who has been attending the Clem & Ann Buenger Club for four years.  She loves the staff & friend she has made at the Club.
  • Gracie Mount, a Junior at Holmes High School, who attends the Marge Schott-Unnewehr Club in Covington, Kentucky. She loves the safe environment the Club provides her after school.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati is extremely proud of all our kids as they continue to exemplify the core values and beliefs of our mission.

“Youth of the Year is a Boys & Girls Clubs national program and is the highest honor we give to a member,” Bresser said.  “The teens who win this award represent the thousands of youth who come through our doors each day as a shining example of success amid challenging circumstances.”

We are extremely grateful to our sponsors; Toyota, who is the national sponsor for the Youth of the Year, the Cincinnati Reds, and our special friends at Toastmasters International for their support of this year’s Youth of the Year competition.
