At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati, volunteers fulfill an important role. Whether serving as a mentor, aiding in daily programming or completing a large group project, volunteers are essential to the success of our program.

Q: Are there any guidelines for volunteering?

A: Yes, our guidelines are as follows:

  • Please provide as much notice as possible in the event that you are not able to volunteer during your scheduled time.
  • Please check in with the person at the front desk and sign in on the “Volunteer Sign In Sheet”.
  • Please leave valuables at home. Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati is not responsible for lost or stolen personal items while you are volunteering.
  • Confidentiality and professionalism are of the utmost importance when working with Club members. Please do not share personal information unless it has been approved by BGCGC.
  • Do not share your personal information with Club members
  • Please do not take photos or videos of our Club members unless you have permission to do so from the Club Director.
  • You may not take from our premises good or property belongings to BGCGC or given to BGCGC to benefit others without written approval from BGCGC.
  • Please understand that you may be asked to leave the property if you do not follow the policies of BGCGC or the directions of a Club staff.
Q: Are there any guidelines that I should follow when working/interacting with Club members?

A: Yes, please follow the guidelines listed below:

  • Introduce yourself to the Club members
  • Get down on their level so you are not speaking down to them
  • Treat Club members with dignity and respect
  • Be accepting
  • Be dependable
  • Keep your promises
  • Do not take Club members out of designated areas without prior approval
  • Any concerns about a Member should be reported immediately to Club Director
Q: What should I wear when volunteering in the clubs?

A: All volunteers should wear their BGCGC T-shirt and be dressed and groomed in appropriate good taste. Remember you will be working with children in a relaxed environment and should be ready for anything. 

Please follow these guidelines at all times:

  •  No clothing advertising or referencing tobacco products, drugs, profanity, alcohol, racism or any other inappropriate languages or images.
  • Closed toe and closed heeled shoes should be worn at all times.
  • No hats are to be worn in the Clubs.
  • Volunteers will be given a name badge that must be worn at all times while in the Clubs.

A Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati T-Shirt can be picked up at the Administrative Building by contacting Sydney Maxwell at smaxwell@bgcgc.org or 513-421-8109 ex. 19.

 

Q: How often should I volunteer?

A: The positions volunteers fill are critical to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati and should be performed on a regularly scheduled and timely basis. Volunteers are asked to commit to 1 hour every other week. The Club, the staff, and the volunteers may be the only consistent elements in a child’s life; therefore it is vital that you do your best to honor your commitment to our Club members. If you fail to show up or if you show up late, we may be faced with many disappointed children. If you are unable to attend or are running late please contact the Club as soon as possible. If you cannot contact the Club then call the Volunteer Coordinator and she will contact the Club.

 

Q: Am I expected to discipline Club members?

A: Volunteers are not expected to take disciplinary measures into their own hands. If a serious behavioral problem arises with a Club member, alert the Club Director and they will handle the problem.

 

Q: What steps should I take if I suspect a Club Member has been abused or neglected?

A: Any volunteer who suspects that a Club member has been abused or neglected must immediately notify the Club Director. The Club Director will take the various steps to investigate, notify the appropriate internal and external authorities and document the situation. Volunteers should not make a report themselves.

 

Q: What is your policy on Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco?

A: The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati certifies that it will comply with the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988 and will strive to maintain its facilities free of drug and alcohol abuse. Volunteers serving with BGCGC shall not: use or be under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, or any improperly used controlled substance during their time of service. Alcohol and illegal drugs are not to be brought onto any BGCGC properties.

If a volunteer is found to be under the influence of or in possession of alcohol or illegal drugs while on BGCGC properties they will be immediately terminated and lose their eligibility to volunteer with BGCGC in the future.

BGCGC is a smoke free work environment. Smoking is prohibited in the buildings, at entrances to buildings, and in the presence of Club Members, parents, and staff.

 

Q: Do the Clubs close for inclement weather?

A: During the winter months we may close the Clubs due to weather conditions. Club closings will be listed with Local 12 WKRC Cincinnati, both on television and on their website, www.local12.com. It is the volunteer’s responsibility to check for Club closings.

If the Clubs remain open but you are unable to attend because of weather please follow the normal absentee procedures. 

INDIVIDUAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNTIES

These are positive, enthusiastic and caring role models interested in creating a regular schedule to assist members in their Graduate, Fit for Life and Ready to Serve programming.

INDIVIDUAL VOLUNTEER APPLICATION PROCESS:

  • Complete a volunteer application 
  • All submitted applications will go through a review and background screening process.
  • Once background checks are cleared, volunteers will be contacted to schedule a mandatory orientation to cover volunteer policies and procedures.  During orientation, volunteer shift times and location will be scheduled with the Volunteer Coordinator.

INDIVIDUAL VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT:

  • Volunteers are needed anytime from Monday through Friday, generally between 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. (hours vary by location).
  • Volunteers must be able to commit to 4 hours per month for a period of 4 months.

INDIVIDUAL VOLUNTEER POSITIONS:

Take a look at the following volunteer positions. These are just a few examples of how volunteers can contribute their time and energy to the children at our Clubs. Volunteers will learn more about opportunities and requirements at their orientation.

HOMEWORK HELPER/TUTOR

Spend 45 minutes to an hour a week helping students with everything from spelling and writing to problem-solving and math. We seek volunteers who can work one-on-one or in small groups with students that need a little extra help with their homework.

FITFORLIFE VOLUNTEER

Hang out in the gym with our Physical Education Coordinator, playing games with kiddos during their 45-minute FitForLife programming. Help teach kids new skills and sports

Note: BGCGC does not accept court-ordered community service hours.

CORPORATE & GROUP VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNTIES

Groups (corporate, civic, collegiate, and church) provide an invaluable service to BGCGC. If your group would like to volunteer, please review the following opportunities, and submit a form here.

Note: For one-time projects, at least two representatives per volunteer group will need to submit information for a background check to be completed.  These individuals needs to be present at the volunteer event.  For ongoing volunteer projects, ALL volunteers must submit information for background checks to be completed.

GROUP VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

CLUB VOLUNTEER DAY

Club Volunteer Day is a way for groups to experience daily Club programming by engaging members in their day-to-day activities. This opportunity is available year-round and must be scheduled four weeks in advance of the group’s desired volunteer date.

CLUB BEAUTIFICATION

Club Beautification is an “as-needed” opportunity consists of projects such as landscaping, cleaning, and organizing, and it is designed to bring together groups of all sizes to enhance the appearance of our buildings. Projects last two or more hours.

HOLIDAY VOLUNTEERS

Holiday volunteers aid in the collection, sorting, wrapping, and distribution of presents for all of our Club locations. Please contact us if your group is interested in, or would like more information about, sponsoring a Club Holiday Party.

ARE THERE ANY CONFIDENTIALLY RULES AT BGCGC?

Yes. Volunteers are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of all privileged and/or confidential information, both written and verbal, that they may be exposed to during their service. This includes information about Club members, other volunteers, staff, or The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Cincinnati.

AM I EXPECTED TO DISCIPLINE CLUB MEMBERS?

CAN I DRIVE CLUB MEMBERS IN MY OWN VEHICLE?

No. All transportation of Club members will occur in Club-owned vehicles. Volunteers are prohibited from transporting Club members in their personal vehicles. Volunteers cannot drive Club vehicles.
